APPLE & PEAR VARIETY UPDATES AND INFORMATION

We planted two additional kinds of apples this spring, namely Braeburn and Cripps Pink, which means we currently offer 37 kinds of Apples including heirloom varieties at Pieter’s Appleyard.   In the spring of 2009, we added three more varieties of Pears, as well as some Peaches and Sweet Cherries. We are always trying to grow our list of varieties we offer for your eating pleasure.

DESCRIPTION

Ambrosia

AMBROSIA

Medium to large in size, mostly red colouration with yellow patches. Has cream colored flesh with a sweet, crisp, aromatic flavour and low acidity. Excellent for eating.

CORTLAND

Sweet and juicy with a hint of tartness. Flesh is snow white and resists browning. It’s excellent for eating, salads, sauce, pies and baking and good for freezing.

COX’S ORANGE PIPPEN

Well known, classic, very fine eating apple. Also excellent for all-around processing. Firm, tender, juicy flesh with a distinctive aroma and flavour.

Apple is creamy white, juicy, firm, crisp and used for fresh eating, baking or pies.

EMPIRE

Flesh is greenish cream, slightly aromatic and sub-acid. Empire apples are known as excellent fresh eating and are good keepers.

 

Fuji

FUJI

The Fuji is a super sweet, crisp apple. It holds its texture when baked. It’s known for its hard texture and syrupy sweetness. It’s excellent for baking and salads.

The Gala is an all-purpose apple with creamy yellow flesh, crisp aromatically-sweet and juicy.

Ginger Gold is a perfect multi-purpose apple great for snacking, salads, and baking. It’s juicy, firm, crisp and tastes sweet and tangy.

Smaller sized apple with a russeted skin. It is good for fresh eating, pies, baking and sauces. Keeps well too.

The flesh is a deep rose red colour. The Hidden Rose is crisp and juicy, with a tangy flavour. It keeps well improving with age. It’s great for fresh eating pies and baking.

Flesh is creamy white, moderately crisp, juicy and moderately acid, Similar to McIntosh. A disease resistant variety.

Pure white flesh. Soft flesh with an aromatic, distinctive flavour. Used for eating and is excellent in cider.

Flesh is firm, moderately juicy and sweet with little acidic flavour. Great for fresh eating or baking.

For such an early variety the flavour is remarkably good. The flesh is light and juicy, and this apple is very easy and enjoyable to eat, but it doesn’t keep long.

A very large apple with outstanding culinary qualities. Flesh is tender sub acidic to tart and juicy. Excellent for pies.

Excellent for fresh eating and canning. Fruit is medium large and green when picked. Yellow when ripe.

The Bosc pear has a naturally occurring russet, which covers the surface, giving it a golden appearance. Bosc pears remain firm and keep their elegant shape during cooking..

FLEMISH BEAUTY

Fruit is large, blushed, attractive with good flavour. Excellent fresh eating and canning.

HARROW DELIGHT

Fruit is medium size and similar to Bartlett in appearance with excellent flavour and smooth flesh. Ground color is yellow with a red blush. Early bearing.

RED D’ANJOU

This winter dessert pear is harvested in mid-September but is available nearly year around due to its fine storage quality when kept in controlled atmosphere. A medium to large sized pear, it is highly coloured with a dark red hue, sweet and richly flavored when ripe.
