WELCOME TO HARVEST 2011
We have had a big event in our family this July. Jessica, one of our three daughters got married. Jessica and her husband Martin now live in the Haliburton area.
We have started to pick our Paulared apples already. We've had a few challenges during the growing season this year. We had such a wet spring followed by a month of almost zero rain in July, but all seems to be on target for a good harvest. We've already picked our peach crop. The peach trees did very well for only being planted in 2009.
We are now growing 37 varieties of apples and 5 different kinds of pears. For those who don't want to Pick Their Own we offer pre-picked apples or pears in our store. In addition to apples and pears, we grow pumpkins, squash and gourds.
We've been busy making our homemade jams, jellies and relishes, which are also available in our store.
We will continue to offer tractor rides on the week-ends during September and October for a small fee.
...and you're welcome to utilize our picnic tables to enjoy your meal and extend your stay at our orchard.
We love to share our wonderful location with you.
We will be starting to make our fresh apple cider in the middle of September - once we have enough ripe varieties for blending. We offer our apple cider in 4 litre, 2 litre, 500 ml and 250 ml jugs. For those adventurous enough to try making apple wine we also sell it by the litre into your carboys.
We will be participating in a couple of events off the farm again this year:
100-Mile Diet Event
We will be participating in the 100-mile Diet event in Grafton at the Grafton arena on September 11 from Noon until 4 pm. For more information about this event click: www.castletongraftonuc.com
Brighton Applefest
We will be participating in the Applefest Street Fair on Saturday September 24 from 10 am to 4 pm. For more information about Applefest click: www.applefest.reach.net
We are working towards having our farm certified through CHC (Canadian Horticultural Council). For the most part this will not change how we do things at the farm. The major change for visitors at the farm will be our inability to accommodate pets in the area where the apples are being produced or anywhere near any other farm products we are growing or selling.
We look forward to seeing you soon!
Sincerely,
Jess, Jennifer and Family
